April 2, 2026

Your support enabled Furbish Thrift to care for another 64 cats this past week. The vet visits we sponsor are the only time that most of these cats will receive any type of medical care. Spay/neuter is the most effective way of controlling the high volume of pregnancies. These treatments also curtail the spread of disease among feral cats.

We have two more rounds of The Big Fix planned for April. Furbish Thrift matches your donations, so any amount you’re able to contribute is tripled. Click on the link below to help us continue this much needed work.

One of our clients asked if he could send you a love letter.

Meet Tom Cat Johnson.

Meow…!

My name is Tom Cat Johnson. I live in Richmond. Thank you for taking care of me. I have been going it alone my entire life. While I come off as a tough guy, I always have felt afraid and unloved. Until now.

Last Sunday was a typical day for me. I had just escaped being almost hit by a truck and was crawling under a warehouse looking for breakfast and clean water when I smelled food. It was in a big box.

I followed my nose and ate a bite when suddenly, a door behind me closed. I was trapped! I have been in dangerous situations before, but I feared the worst. I was so scared. And alone, as usual.

Then a lady appeared and told me I was safe. She put more food in the box and kept talking to me as she loaded me in her car.

I later found myself in a big room with lots of other cats in boxes just like mine. We were all very scared and were calling out as loud as we could.

I spotted my kitty girl, Doris, in a box across the room. I called out to her, but I don’t know if she heard me.

Then a lady gave me a treat, and I began to feel sleepy. When I awoke, she was telling me how handsome I was and what a good boy I had been. For some reason, I could now hear so much better. My ears no longer had those little bugs called mites. That bloody wound that I had from fighting with another boy cat did not hurt nearly as much as it had.

And my stomach didn’t hurt anymore. The lady said that was because I no longer had something called parasites. My gums were no longer bleeding. It was much easier to eat.

The next day, I was returned to my neighborhood. That nice lady filled a bowl with food and told me that she loved me and all cats. I wish I had met her when I was a boy.

While there is much I do not understand about the last few days, I want to thank you on behalf of all the kitties you helped. It is still dangerous out here, but for once, if just for a few minutes, as scared as I was, I felt cared for and loved.

And one last meow…I saw Doris this morning and for some strange reason, neither of us have the urge to have any more children.

Purrrr,

Tom Cat Johnson
